Why Your Shower Grout Is Falling Out in Chunks I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. Most guys skip the leveling compound because it is messy and expensive. They think the underlayment or the grout will hide the dip. It won’t. I…
Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. That job was a masterclass in why shortcuts are the most expensive way to build a bathroom. I walked…
Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. That job was the perfect example of why the foundation matters more than the finish. I was there because…
Shadows do not lie about moisture The flashlight check identifies pinhole leaks in grout by casting low-angle light across the surface to reveal shadows created by tiny craters or voids. This method relies on the physics of light refraction to find structural gaps that are invisible under direct overhead lighting. By placing a high-lumen light…
I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. Most guys skip the leveling compound because they think the underlayment or the tile backer will hide the dip. It won’t. I walked into a master bathroom last week where the homeowner was frantic because…
I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. But I walked into a master bathroom recently where the homeowner was staring at a pile of twelve-by-twenty-four porcelain…
The invisible movement ruining your shower walls Cracked grout in shower corners occurs because of differential movement between two meeting planes where rigid cementitious materials fail to accommodate structural shifting. Internal corners are change-of-plane joints that require flexible 100 percent silicone sealant rather than hard grout to maintain a waterproof seal during building settlement and…
Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. I was working on a luxury shower floor where the slab had a three quarter inch drop over just…
Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. That job taught me that if you do not respect the substrate, the finish will haunt you for a…
Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. That same obsession with the foundation applies to the very last thing you do in a bathroom which is…
