They are structural invitations for grease, dirty mop water, and bacteria to set up a permanent home. If your grout is turning black, it is because your cleaning routine is likely feeding a microbial colony living inside your floor’s skeletal structure.

The porous trap under your feet

Black grout in kitchens is usually caused by dirty mop water being absorbed into the porous cementitious matrix, the buildup of saponified soap residue, and the growth of biofilm within the microscopic voids of the grout joint. Regular cleaning often pushes dirt deeper rather than removing it. Most homeowners do not realize that standard grout is essentially a hard sponge. It is made of Portland cement and sand.
