Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. I walked into that house smelling like pulverized lime and sweat, but I knew the 1/8 inch dip in the center of the living room would have snapped the locking mechanisms of a twelve-dollar-per-foot laminate within a year. Most homeowners see a floor as a color choice. I see it as a structural engineering challenge. If the subfloor is not flat to within 3/16 of an inch over a 10-foot radius, you are not installing a floor, you are installing a ticking time bomb of friction and failure.

The flashlight trick involves placing a high-lumen LED light flat on the subfloor to reveal micro-debris, silica dust, and imperfections through raking light. This method highlights shadows cast by tiny particles that a standard vacuum or broom often misses during laminate installation. It is the only way to ensure the bond between the underlayment and the substrate is completely clear of particulates. When you lay that light down, a single grain of sand looks like a mountain. That grain of sand is a pressure point. When you walk across the finished floor, the plank flexes over that grain. Over time, that tiny piece of grit acts like a diamond drill bit, wearing away at the underside of your plank or the integrity of your underlayment. It creates a clicking sound that will drive you mad. This is not about being clean. This is about preventing mechanical interference in the locking joint. I have seen entire rows of laminate disengage because a thin layer of drywall dust prevented the tongue from seating fully into the groove. You must vacuum, then you must tack-mop, and then you must use the light.

The 1/8 inch that ruins everything

Floor leveling requires a tolerance of 1/8 inch over 6 feet to prevent plank deflection and joint failure. Using self-leveling underlayment or grinding high spots is necessary to maintain structural integrity and avoid the hollow sound associated with floating floors. If you ignore a dip, the laminate bridge spans that gap. Every step you take forces the locking mechanism to bend. Most laminate cores are made of High-Density Fiberboard, which is essentially compressed sawdust and resin. It has a high specific gravity, but it lacks the tensile strength to handle repeated vertical shearing. Eventually, the tongue snaps. Now you have a gap that collects dirt and moisture. It will buckle. You cannot fix a snapped tongue without ripping the floor back to the wall. This is why I obsess over the concrete slab. I use a 10-foot straightedge. If I can slide a nickel under that straightedge, the floor is not ready for laminate. We use calcium aluminate based levelers because they dry faster and shrink less than Portland cement based products. The chemistry of the bond matters as much as the flatness of the surface.

The ghost in the expansion gap

An expansion gap of at least 3/8 inch around the perimeter is mandatory for laminate planks to accommodate thermal expansion and humidity changes. Failing to provide this clearance leads to buckling, peaking, and warping as the floor system expands against drywall or baseboards. People think because laminate is not solid wood, it does not move. That is a lie. The HDF core is incredibly sensitive to humidity. In the summer, the floor grows. If it hits a wall, it has nowhere to go but up. I have seen floors lift three inches off the subfloor because some handyman tucked the planks tight against the bottom of a kitchen island. You must never pin a floating floor. This includes heavy cabinetry. If you are doing a kitchen remodel, the cabinets go in first, then the floor goes around them. Do not install a heavy island on top of laminate. You are effectively anchoring the floor, preventing it from breathing. The floor will rip itself apart at the weakest joint.

Why showers and laminate are natural enemies

Installing laminate in bathrooms or near showers is high risk due to hydrostatic pressure and top-down moisture. While many brands claim to be waterproof, the locking joints are often the vulnerable point where standing water can seep into the fiberboard core and cause irreversible swelling. I do not care what the box says. If you put laminate in a bathroom, you are gambling. Moisture from a shower stall migrates through the air and settles in the expansion gaps. Once it hits the raw edge of the HDF, the core expands like a sponge. It never shrinks back. You get what we call mushrooming at the seams. If you must use a wood-look product in a wet area, go with a Luxury Vinyl Plank that has an SPC core. Even then, you need to caulk the perimeter with 100% silicone. Most guys skip the caulk because it is tedious. Then they wonder why the floor looks like a topographical map after six months of morning showers. Humidity control is not a suggestion, it is a requirement.

Carpet install myths that destroy laminate floors

A carpet install often hides subfloor defects like cracked slabs or uneven plywood seams that must be corrected before laying laminate. Unlike carpet padding, which absorbs vertical variances, laminate underlayment is designed for sound dampening and cannot mask a poorly prepared substrate. I see this all the time. A homeowner rips up old, smelly carpet and thinks they can just click the laminate into place. Carpet is the great hider of sins. Laminate is the great revealer. Every tack strip hole, every clump of dried drywall mud, and every floor jack indentation will telegraph through to the surface. Or worse, it will cause the planks to rock. If the floor rocks, the joints wear out. You need to spend more time with a floor scraper and a vacuum than you do with a saw. My checklist for every job is the same, and it is non-negotiable.

• Test the concrete moisture using a calcium chloride kit.
• Grind down every high spot until the straightedge sits flush.
• Fill every low spot with high-compressive strength leveler.
• Vacuum the entire surface twice using a HEPA filter.
• Perform the flashlight test to find hidden debris.
• Install a 6-mil poly vapor barrier over concrete.
• Acclimate the laminate in the room for 48 hours minimum.

The chemistry of underlayment and sound

Selecting the right underlayment involves balancing compression strength with Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings to ensure acoustic comfort. Too much cushion or soft padding will cause locking mechanism failure, as the joints are forced to over-flex under foot traffic. This is the contrarian truth of the industry. People buy the thickest, squishiest underlayment they can find because it feels good underfoot. That is a mistake. A floating floor needs a firm base. If the underlayment is too soft, the tongue-and-groove joint acts like a hinge. It was never designed to be a hinge. It was designed to be a static connection. You want a high-density foam or felt underlayment. This provides the best sound dampening without sacrificing the mechanical stability of the floor. In a high-rise or a condo, you are usually looking for an STC rating of 50 or higher to satisfy the neighbors downstairs. But never prioritize sound over the structural requirements of the locking system. A quiet floor that is falling apart is still a failure. You need to understand the physics of the load.
