The ghost in the expansion gap
Maintaining a proper expansion gap at the edge of the hardwood is mandatory for structural integrity, even when tucking carpet. The National Wood Flooring Association is very clear on this. You need space for the wood to grow during the humid months. If you butt the wood tight against a wall or another floor, it will buckle. When transitioning to carpet, the ‘tuck’ method allows you to hide this gap. You install a tack strip about 1/4 inch away from the edge of the finished hardwood. The carpet is then stretched over the strip and the excess is tucked into the gulley between the tack strip and the wood. The chemistry of a permanent bond
Adhesive selection determines the long-term success of any flooring transition where mechanical fasteners are not an option. When you are tucking carpet against hardwood, you are relying on the tension of the carpet and the grip of the tack strip. But if you are using a shim or a ramp, that shim needs to be glued to the subfloor with a high-shear-strength adhesive. This creates a gentle slope that the human eye cannot detect once the carpet and pad are installed over it. You place the thickest part of the shim against the hardwood edge.
