I once walked into a home where a high-end runner was taped down with duct tape. The homeowner thought they were being clever, but they ruined the laminate finish and the rug still moved. Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. If your subfloor has a dip, your laminate will flex, and any carpet or rug sitting on top will migrate. It is a simple matter of physics and structural integrity. You cannot expect a textile to stay put on a moving surface. When your floor moves, your carpet moves. You have to understand the chemistry of the wear layer and the mechanical bond of the padding to solve this for good.
The physics of the slippery interface
To keep your carpet from sliding on a laminate floor, you must increase the coefficient of friction between the smooth aluminum oxide wear layer and the textile backing. Using a natural rubber rug pad or high-quality felt combination pad creates a mechanical grip that prevents lateral movement during foot traffic. This stops the carpet from bunching or migrating across the room.
Laminate floors are essentially high-density fiberboard with a plastic picture on top. That picture is protected by a wear layer that is designed to be hard and slick. If you secure a rug too firmly or use heavy furniture to pin it down, you might inadvertently lock the floor in place. People forget that laminate is a floating floor. It is not nailed or glued down. It needs to breathe. In the summer, the humidity goes up, the HDF core absorbs some of that moisture, and the planks grow. In the winter, they shrink. Think about the mechanics of a suction cup. If there is a scratch or a bump, the suction fails. A rug pad works on a similar principle of surface contact. If a natural rubber pad is not enough, you can look at mechanical anchors like heavy furniture or specialized rug-to-floor grippers. These grippers use a silicone-based adhesive that is safe for laminate finishes and provides a reusable bond. However, the subfloor must be level to prevent these anchors from putting too much localized stress on the laminate locking joints.
Sometimes you have a rug that just wants to move, maybe in a high-traffic hallway where kids are running. In those cases, I like the corner grippers that use a suction technology. They do not use glue, they use micro-suction. You stick them to the rug, and they press down onto the laminate. But again, if that laminate is dirty or if the subfloor is uneven, they will fail. You have to keep the floor clean. Dust is the enemy of friction. A thin layer of drywall dust or even just household pet dander will turn your expensive rug pad into a slip-and-slide.
