Why your shower curb is higher on one side
Most guys skip the leveling compound. They think the underlayment will hide the dip. It won’t. I spent three days grinding concrete on a job last month just so the floor wouldn’t click like a castanet. That job taught me that if you do not respect the slab, the slab will humiliate you. I walked onto that site smelling like WD-40 and old oak dust, ready to fight a subfloor that was three quarters of an inch out of level across a ten foot span. When we talk about a shower curb being higher on one side, we are not talking about an aesthetic choice. We are talking about the reality of a home that is never truly square, level, or plumb. If you are seeing a height discrepancy in your shower threshold, you are likely looking at a deliberate correction for a failing subfloor or a necessary structural pitch required by the Tile Council of North America standards.
The physics of the uneven threshold
Shower curbs often appear higher on one side because the bathroom floor or subfloor is not level. To ensure the top of the curb remains perfectly level for a glass door installation, the installer must vary the height of the curb to compensate for the slope of the surrounding floor. This prevents water leakage and ensures structural integrity of the enclosure.
The curb is a bridge. It exists at the intersection of two different environments. On one side, you have the wet area, which is a sloped system designed to move water toward a drain via gravity. On the other side, you have the dry area, which might be a carpet install, laminate, or hardwood. The dry area is supposed to be level, but in the real world, it rarely is. If the joists under your bathroom have settled over the last forty years, the floor might drop half an inch from the left side of the shower to the right. If the installer built a curb that was exactly four inches high across its entire length, the top of that curb would be crooked. You cannot hang a glass door on a crooked curb. The door would either swing open on its own or strike the floor. To fix this, we build the curb to be level on top, which means if the floor it sits on is leaning, one side of the curb has to be taller to make up the difference.
The subfloor lies to your level
Subfloor deflection and unlevel plywood are the primary reasons why a shower curb appears lopsided from the outside. When a joist spans too far without support, the deflection causes the floor to sag. Professional installers use self-leveling underlayment or mortar beds to create a flat plane before the waterproofing membrane is applied to the shower assembly.
I have seen it a thousand times. A homeowner buys a beautiful new laminate floor and expects it to lay flat over a subfloor that looks like a rolling sea. They think the foam underlayment will act as a cushion. It does not. In fact, if you use an underlayment that is too thick, the locking mechanisms on your laminate or LVP will snap under the pressure of your footsteps. The same logic applies to the shower curb. The curb is built on top of the subfloor. If I put a level on your plywood and the bubble is touching the line, I know I have work to do. We use the TCNA B415 or B420 methods for shower receptors. These standards require a very specific slope within the shower, usually a quarter inch per foot. But the curb itself must be a stable, level dam. If the floor outside the shower is dipping toward a bearing wall, that curb has to grow in height as the floor falls away. This is not a mistake. It is the only way to ensure the glass guys can actually do their job later.

The thin line between drainage and disaster
Waterproofing integrity depends on the pitch of the curb and the pre-pan slope. According to TCNA standards, the curb must be sloped toward the drain at approximately one eighth inch to one quarter inch. This ensures that water sitting on top of the tile is pulled back into the shower pan instead of onto the bathroom floor.
We have to talk about the molecular level of water. Water has surface tension. It wants to grab onto things. If a curb is perfectly flat or, heaven forbid, sloped outward, the water will travel across the grout lines and find its way to your baseboards. Over time, that moisture will rot the bottom of your door casing and wick into the drywall. When we build these curbs, we often use a stacked 2×4 approach or a pre-fabricated high-density foam block. If we use wood, we have to be incredibly careful about the moisture content of the lumber. If I buy 2x4s from a big box store that have been sitting in a humid warehouse, they are going to shrink when they get into your air-conditioned house. That shrinkage can cause the tile to crack or the grout to pop. This is why many of us have moved to foam curbs. They are dimensionally stable. They do not expand. They do not contract. But even with foam, the height must be adjusted to account for the floor’s pitch. If the curb is an inch higher on the left, it is because the floor on the left is an inch lower than the floor on the right.

The chemistry of the bond
Modified thin-set mortar uses polymers to create a chemical bond between the waterproofing membrane and the tile. When dealing with a curb height discrepancy, the installer may use medium bed mortar to build up one side, ensuring the tile layout remains symmetrical despite the structural slope of the house.
Let us look at the molecular reality of the mortar. You have your Portland cement, your graded sand, and your water-retention agents. But the magic happens with the polymers. These long-chain molecules wrap around the crystalline structure of the cement as it hydrates. This gives the mortar the ability to flex slightly without losing its grip. When I am setting a curb, I am not just throwing mud down. I am calculating the load. A glass door can weigh over a hundred pounds. That weight is concentrated on small hinges that are often drilled directly through the tile and into the curb. If the curb is not solid, or if the mortar bond is weak, that glass will eventually sag. This is another reason for the height difference. Sometimes we have to double up on the substrate on one side to ensure there is enough structural meat for the heavy-duty anchors to grab onto. If you have a carpet install meeting the shower, the transition is even more critical. You need that curb to stand proud enough that the carpet tuck doesn’t look like a messy pile of fluff against the tile.
The expansion gap ghost
Expansion gaps are required at every vertical surface to prevent tile tenting or laminate buckling. In a bathroom remodel, the shower curb acts as a massive perimeter boundary. If the curb is not integrated correctly with the floor leveling system, the entire flooring assembly can fail during seasonal humidity shifts.
I remember a job in a coastal town where the humidity stayed at eighty percent all summer. The guy before me didn’t leave a gap between his tile and the curb. When the house settled and the humidity spiked, the floor tile had nowhere to go. It pushed against the curb with so much force that the grout literally exploded out of the joints. It sounded like a gunshot. When we talk about the curb being higher on one side, we also have to consider the expansion of the materials. If one side of the bathroom is an exterior wall and the other is an interior wall, they will move at different rates. A master installer sees these invisible forces. We build the curb to be the anchor of the room. It has to be higher than the finished floor height of the rest of the room by at least two inches according to most codes, but that is the minimum. Often, we go higher to create a definitive visual break and to ensure that even if the bathroom floor floods due to a sink overflow, the shower stays contained.

- Use a six foot level to determine the high and low points of the entire bathroom.
- Calculate the finished floor height of the adjacent room if doing a carpet install.
- Ensure the curb top has a positive pitch toward the drain of at least 1/8 inch.
- Verify that the waterproofing membrane covers the entire curb and overlaps the floor.
The 1/8 inch that ruins everything
Precision measurement is the difference between a professional installation and a DIY failure. A one eighth inch error in curb height can result in a glass door that will not close or a puddle that never drains. Using laser levels is the only way to ensure the horizontal plane of the curb is perfectly calibrated against the drain elevation.
It is easy to get lazy. You think a little bit of thin-set will fix a dip. It won’t. Thin-set is not a leveling agent. It is an adhesive. If you try to build up a half-inch of thin-set under a tile to level a curb, you are inviting disaster. As the water in the mortar evaporates, the mortar shrinks. If the bed is too thick, it shrinks unevenly. Now your tile is lipped. Now your curb is no longer level. Now your expensive glass door is hitting the corner of a tile every time you close it. This is why we use floor leveling compounds before we even think about tile. We create the flat surface first. Then we build the curb. If the curb looks higher on one side, it is because the installer did the math. They realized that the floor was falling away and they compensated to keep the top edge of that curb on a perfect horizontal plane. It is the mark of someone who knows what they are doing. It is the mark of someone who has spent enough time on their knees to know that the house is always trying to move, and it is our job to stop it.

When you look at your shower and wonder why the curb isn’t symmetrical, stop looking at the curb and start looking at the floor. The floor is the foundation of the narrative.
